The most practical residential weather-based sprinkler system controllers use meteorological data gathered from weather stations which is then sent to individual residential sprinkler system controllers using wireless communication. The controller then adjusts the sprinkler system run times according to the current actual weather conditions.

In the last few years, researchers have been working on a type of 'smart' sprinkler system controller that could use weather-based data relating to the relative rate of evapotranspiration (ET) to more automatically control the controllers function. Evapotranspiration is a term used generally to describe the sum of evaporation and plant transpiration (movement) from the earth's land surface to the atmosphere, and specifically to use that relative ET data to adjust sprinkler controllers.

While there are a couple of approaches to ET, or weather-based sprinkler system controllers in residential settings, the most economic, and as such, the most universally practical uses meteorological data gathered from local weather stations to calculate the reference ET. The calculated ET is then sent to individual residential sprinkler controllers using wireless communication. The ET controller then adjusts the sprinkler system run times – or the number of cycles – according to the variable and changing weather throughout the growing season.
